DHI Celebrates BlueBikes Re-Fleet
By Abigail Harrison, DHI Communications Coordinator
Downtown Huntsville, Inc. celebrated the 10th anniversary of its BlueBikes program with new bikes at all of the downtown stations. The re-fleet was announced at a joint news conference with Cummings Research Park (CRP) on Wednesday.
BlueBikes offer riders a unique way to experience Downtown Huntsville and provide a mode of transportation that is clean and energy friendly. There are eleven bike share stations around Downtown Huntsville.
CRP announced the launch of its new BlueBikes system, with three pilot locations inside Research Park. The downtown and CRP BlueBikes collaboration allows for connectivity between both systems. Riders can also purchase a $30 annual membership that offers unlimited 30-minute rides for both downtown and CRP BlueBikes systems.
To check out a bike at any station in downtown or CRP, riders can download the Movatic app, available on the App Store and Google Play. The app makes it easy to create an account, add a credit card, sign up for a membership, or pay by the 30 minutes.
Riders should scan the QR code or enter the bike number to unlock the bike from the rack. Bikes can be returned to any station. If the rack is full, riders should secure the bike to a fixed object nearby then submit a support ticket via the app in order to end their rental and dispatch a mechanic to retrieve the bike. Helmets are not provided at the bike stations but are encouraged for bikers to wear at all times.
Several cycling events are planned soon, including Mayor Tommy Battle’s 15 th Annual Bike Ride and Block Party on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Big Spring Park.
Both downtown and CRP bike share programs are sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama.
