Downtown Huntsville, Inc. Presents the Downtown Pickleball Takeover
By Abigail Harrison, DHI Communications Coordinator
Downtown Huntsville will be transformed into a vibrant pickleball hub on Saturday, October 26, as Downtown Huntsville, Inc. (DHI) and the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau present the Downtown Pickleball Takeover.
Sponsored by The Orthopaedic Center (TOC), this free, family-friendly event invites the community to experience one of the fastest-growing sports in the country in an exciting urban setting. With pickleball courts popping up across two downtown locations, participants can enjoy a day filled with open play, live music, and activities for all ages.
Temporary pickleball courts will be set up from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Northside Square and from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Holmes Avenue, next to the Greene Street parking garage. The courts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the day. For those who prefer to secure their spot ahead of time, court reservations can also be made online.
One of the event highlights is a pickleball clinic, hosted by the Huntsville Pickleball Club, which will take place from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Northside Square and from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on Holmes Avenue. These one-hour sessions are perfect for beginners and anyone looking to sharpen their skills, with experienced instructors leading the way.
In addition to pickleball, the event will feature live music from local musicians and plenty of kids’ activities. Throughout the day, attendees can enjoy delicious offerings from nearby establishments and food trucks on Holmes Avenue.
“This event brings together the community in a fun, healthy way, and we’re excited to offer a unique downtown experience with pickleball at its heart,” said Rob Buddo, President & CEO of DHI. “Whether you're playing or spectating, we invite everyone to come downtown and enjoy a great day of activity, music, and entertainment.”
The Downtown Pickleball Takeover is free to attend, and no prior experience is needed to participate. The courts are open to all ages and skill levels. Participants are encouraged to bring their own paddles and pickleballs.
After the pickleball festivities, the public is also invited to attend the Downtown Night Market from 6:00 to 10:00 PM in Washington Park (the pocket park behind the Yarbrough Building) for a night of local artists, makers, crafts, DJs, and more. The event is presented by DHI and Night L!fe Huntsville.
Additionally, the Northside Square Halloween Fest is happening directly after the Downtown Pickleball Takeover, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM on Northside Square, presented by BeeZr, Del Chuco, Jack Brown’s, and The Poppy and Parliament. The block party will feature free live music, activities, and food and drink specials from the participating establishments.
