Sweet Support: Raising Childhood Cancer Awareness with The Moon Bakeshop & Smile-A-Mile
By Abigail Harrison, DHI Communications Coordinator, & Sally Ham, DHI Ambassador
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month—a time dedicated to raising awareness about the impact childhood cancer has on children and families worldwide. Here in Huntsville, a special collaboration is shining a light on this cause while also supporting a beloved local business and a life-changing organization.
To honor the month, The Moon Bakeshop has partnered with Smile-A-Mile to raise both awareness and funds for the important cause. All month long, the shop will offer gold rocket cookies, specially created to support the ongoing fight against childhood cancer.
For every gold rocket cookie sold, The Moon Bakeshop will donate $1 to Smile-A-Mile. These funds will help support the organization’s camps, which provide children battling cancer with a much-needed escape. The camps offer healing, hope, and joy to both children and their families during incredibly difficult times.
Buying these cookies also helps raise awareness about childhood cancer. Beyond enjoying a tasty treat, each cookie serves as a reminder of the importance of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Downtown Huntsville Ambassador, Sally Ham, is a childhood cancer survivor. During her battle with leukemia, Sally had the opportunity to attend camp through Smile-A-Mile. Sally’s dedication for the cause is what sparked her to approach The Moon Bakeshop with the idea to raise awareness and money through cookies.
My name is Sally Ham and although you may know me as an avid Huntsville foodie, I am also a childhood cancer survivor. September is a special month to me and so many others as it is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. With an ever growing social media presence I figured one of the best ways I could utilize it would be to share this awareness with my audience, as well as put the spotlight on two wonderful places.
The first being our beautiful local bakery The Moon Bakeshop. A precious, family friendly spot that produces some of the greatest baked goods you will ever taste. Last year when I approached them with the opportunity of helping to spread awareness of this month, as well as raise money for a childhood cancer camp they jumped on it immediately! With their time and effort we were able to sell 450 gold cookies- wow.
And that's where Smile A Mile comes in. So why them, you ask? Well when I was a little girl with leukemia I had the grand opportunity to attend this very camp and it changed my life. It gave me and so many others the chance to have a real childhood, one that is stolen from you when you have cancer. It brought friendships into my life I otherwise would not have had. It gave and still gives me and countless others hope, comfort and joy when we need it most. I grew up always knowing "Until there is a cure, there's camp".
I hope you will join me in not only bringing awareness to others about childhood cancer, but also supporting a local business and helping bring hope to others! Thank you.
