Women in Music Week is Back!
By Abigail Harrison, DHI Communications Coordinator
Due to overwhelming popularity, Huntsville Women in Music Weekend is now Huntsville Women in Music Week. The event returns to the Rocket City for its fifth year on September 15-24 as part of Huntsville Music Month.
“Women in Music Week allows Huntsville to showcase over 50 women in the music industry over 10 days at various venues, and provides artists the opportunity to shine on stages throughout the city, " said Alli Johnson, Executive Producer of Women in Music Huntsville.
The celebration began in 2018 under the direction of Alex Hendrix-Bertaska and Chad Emerson (then CEO of DHI), and it quickly became a fan favorite. What started out as a weekend event has expanded into a music festival that lasts for over a week and showcases many talented women musicians.
“Chad and Alex nurtured the idea of Women in Music and now with the direction of Huntsville Music Office, being part of what that has turned into today has been extraordinary,” Johnson said. “We've got a great team that is dedicated to spotlighting talented and diverse Women in Music in the city of Huntsville and all over.”
What’s even more special about this year is that they are highlighting a main event each night. A lineup of the performers can be found on the new Women in Music website (www.womeninmusicHSV.com). Along with the main events, there will be free, special events happening all week at various locations around the city. More information on these events can be found on their social media pages (@womeninmusicHSV).
Women in Music Week is not just for locals. All are welcome and encouraged to come out and support the awesome talent and performance spaces within Huntsville’s thriving music scene.
“Celebrating Women in Music means inspiration, opportunity, and representation for the diverse community of women that call Huntsville and surrounding areas home,” Johnson said. “Not only can everyone come out and hear amazing performances from their neighbors, but women of all ages, races, and music genres can look forward to the chance to perform for their community.
Be on the lookout for the Downtown Lunch Lounge, which is a new DHI event coming to Courthouse Square on September 18. Each week, local musicians will be performing to create a relaxed environment for you to enjoy your lunch break. The series kicks off with the start of Women in Music Week, and each day from September 18-22, a woman musician will be performing live music from 11 AM - 1 PM. More information is coming soon!
