How “Supporting Local” has saved our Downtown Huntsville Small Businesses

Shopping small has been an important topic over the years and especially during this pandemic. Unlike large franchises, small businesses have to work harder on marketing and sales. In many places around the country, even New York City, people support these small businesses now more than ever! This is because the pandemic has hit small businesses the worst. Yet, Downtown Huntsville is filled with thriving small businesses, and despite the pandemic, it’s amazing to see them all bouncing with life.

So the question is...how? How did Downtown Huntsville small businesses make it through one of the worst economic hits we’ve seen? Although it sounds cliche, the answer to this question is through support. Support from the community and other small businesses has kept our Downtown alive.

Roosevelt & Co. and Elitaire Boutique collaborated this year to support each others businesses.

Roosevelt & Co. and Elitaire Boutique collaborated this year to support each others businesses.

When the world stopped and went virtual, so did many of these businesses. The small retail businesses in Downtown Huntsville did what they could virtually for them all to succeed. These businesses know who their neighbors are Downtown, which means collaborating and posting about each other on social media as a great way to reach out to the community. They could rally behind each other for support and to share ideas, discuss unique strategies and even vent about the issues their businesses were facing.

Aside from support through a screen, this small business community also lent hands when needed. Huntsville Gear’s beginning is a great example of the small business retail community in Downtown. Business partners Bryan Cole and Shayquawn Austin were in the process of starting their retail business Downtown when COVID-19 began. Once they were able to continue the process of opening their business, neighboring retail business owners even helped to install the drywall in their shop. If that’s not a tight-knit community, we don’t know what is!

Of course, though, no business could survive without customers. Many retail small businesses Downtown had a connection with their customers before the pandemic happened. This connection, and sometimes even friendships, allowed many of these small businesses to stay open. Caley Paige Home and Gifts had opened only 6 months (September 2019) before the COVID-19 shutdowns. The owner, Brooke Busby, believes that the relationships she made with her customers pre-pandemic were the reason her store survived. At the next door over, Kayla Adams from Elitaire Boutique said she has approximately 20 customers' cell phone numbers due to the personal relationships she has built.

“[People] want to come in and feel like they have a friend when they’re shopping, and that’s what we try to do here,” Adams said. “We get to know them, and we become friends with them, and I think that’s what makes shopping fun.”

Huntsville Gear took to social media to thank those that helped them set up their shop.

Adams also mentioned that in any other community, surviving the pandemic would have been more difficult.

As life returns to some normalcy, small businesses Downtown have not forgotten each other. For instance, Huntsville Gear is working on a collaboration with Honest Coffee Roasters that will be coming soon. There is still an unspoken code through the community about sharing posts on social media. So even after the storm of COVID, there is still a bond of support between small retail businesses Downtown.

Each small retail business we spoke with genuinely feels that the Downtown Huntsville community cares about small businesses. When the pandemic began, and many stores reduced their hours, the community realized just how important small businesses are to our way of life in Downtown.

With the distinct importance retail small businesses hold in the Rocket City Center, it is easy to see why so many small businesses thrive here. Some might believe that opening your own small business Downtown might be terrifying or simply a dream. However, many small retailers tell us that’s not the case. “I love Downtown,” Busby said. She regards her business as extremely rewarding. Austin has seen overwhelming success, even though Huntsville Gear has only been open for four weeks. According to Adams, everything has been amazing Downtown, specifically the neighboring small businesses.

Caley Paige Home & Gifts showed how much they care about their customers with a sign saying “Stay Well Huntsville” during the rise of COVID-19 cases.

Caley Paige Home & Gifts showed how much they care about their customers with a sign saying “Stay Well Huntsville” during the rise of COVID-19 cases.

We feel that Downtown has a community like no other, big city atmosphere with small-town vibes, and that makes a perfect storm for small businesses to thrive. With all these positive regards to the Downtown atmosphere, we hope to see small retail businesses continue to grow in leaps and bounds. Adams believes that the future is very bright for Downtown Huntsville, and Elitaire Boutique has big plans for the future as well. The boutique will announce a big surprise in August, so be on the lookout! Austin, with Huntsville Gear, is looking to host another fashion show, similar to his previous show, with all the boutiques around town this fall. If you are a boutique and interested in the show, please feel free to reach out to Austin.

We greatly appreciate all of our retail small businesses Downtown, and if you are looking for ways to support these businesses, there are plenty! Of course, you can stop by the stores yourself, and when you get there, you might even create these personal relationships with the owners that you simply can’t get at large franchises. You can also stop by a Clinton Row Sidewalk Sale, our Friday Night Art Walks, and the Saturday Outdoor Market at Lowe Mill. These small businesses put a massive amount of time and effort into what they do, they care about their product, and most importantly, they care about their customers. If you are interested in growing a friendship and investing in our community, we encourage you to shop local!

Downtown Huntsville Night Light Trail

by: Sydney Kate Watson, DHI Communications Intern

There’s nothing quite like strolling through the streets of Downtown to enjoy the sights and sounds that our city has to offer. However, with the heat rising, there aren’t as many chances to enjoy those strolls. Well, have you considered evening strolls? There are plenty of awesome views to be had when the sun is down in Downtown. From The Color Walk to Big Spring Park, let us help you plan your Downtown Huntsville Night Light Trail!

File_006(2).jpeg

The Clinton Row Color Walk

We start in the alley off of Clinton Avenue East: The Color Walk. The alleyway is filled with different colored spotlights throughout, highlighting the unique local artwork in a way you’ve never seen before. If you’ve been to the Color Walk already, please note that new art is added every so often to keep the alley fresh and interesting. The Color Walk celebrates the tremendous talent of Downtown Huntsville artists and makes for the perfect evening stroll. If you’re in love with this wonderful use of public space, check out our Secret Art Trail!

clinton row bloc party.jpg

Clinton Avenue String Lights

From the Color Walk, step out of the alley onto Clinton Avenue to view the Clinton Row string lights. On Friday and Saturday evenings, a portion of Clinton is closed to keep traffic out, making it the perfect time for a fun string light photoshoot! Every photoshoot deserves an exciting new outfit or accessory; the Shops at the Clinton Row Garage and the Clinton Row Shops are here for all your fashion needs!

200 West Side Square Lights

After dancing in the street, you can head south on Jefferson Street to reach West Side Square. Here you can see the colorful lights projected onto the 200 West Side Square building. These colorful lights are a Downtown Huntsville tradition and continually light up the square year after year with a pop of color!

File_004.jpeg

Big Spring Grotto Lights

To travel from this pop of color to Big Spring Park East, you have two options. First, you could head south a little further on West Side Square and walk down the stairs to your right, or you can walk down a slope on Spring Street SW. If you can take the stairs, we recommend it since the stairs drop you off in the perfect position to witness the lights in the Big Spring Grotto. The Big Spring Grotto is a must-see for anyone visiting Downtown and a favorite of locals.

On your stroll from Big Spring Park East to West, you might think there is something missing from the east side of the park, the Christmas Trees! Downtown Huntsville’s Tinsel Trail is one of our favorite holiday traditions, and it’s closer to being Tinsel Trail time than you might think. We are so excited to announce that Christmas Trees for Tinsel Trail will go on sale this Sunday, August 1. So, while you stroll through Big Spring East, remember that Tinsel Trail is right around the corner!

Big Spring Park West

We end the stroll in Big Spring Park West with the lights under the Canal Bridge. These lights were added to the park earlier this year and make Big Spring Park West the perfect selfie destination. Bright blue, green, and purple lights shine down on the canal leading to Big Spring Park West and are a wonderful spot to play, rest, or pose. This new light feature is the perfect ending to our Downtown Huntsville Night Light Trail!

Downtown Huntsville is a magical place once the sun goes down. So, use this itinerary to explore the Rocket City Center like you never have before!

Cool Down in Downtown

by: Sydney Kate Watson, DHI Communications Intern

As summer starts to heat up, it’s the perfect time to cool down! We have some fun Downtown activities that will entertain you and your family while you beat the heat!

tempImageHzaViF.gif

Water Fun

The Splash Pad in Bicentennial Park is a fantastic way for the kids to cool off! The park is located directly behind the EarlyWorks Children’s Museum and is open to the public for free! While at the splash pad, there are several benches for you to relax while watching your children plus enjoy a shady pergola and several public art pieces. Or you can check out another splash pad in our Merrimack District, the Everybody Can Play Splash Pad, located in Brahan Spring Park. There is a large pavilion that you can rent for parties, but the splash pad itself is free to the public!

If your family is more interested in the full-on water experience, we have what you need! Also located in the Merrimack District is the Huntsville Aquatics Center. After its renovations were completed in 2017, the Aquatics Center is one of the largest indoor facilities of its kind in the United States. General admission to this great facility is only four dollars!

cnoT_3cs.jpg

Mountain Breeze

Another escape from the heat is to head to the mountain, Monte Sano Mountain! As you drive to the top of Monte Sano, the air becomes cooler due to the higher elevation. On the mountain, there are plenty of activities! You can check out Burritt on the Mountain where you can step back in time to the 1800s and discover a different way of life. They also offer a variety of different activities, for the family or for adults only. This summer, Burritt on the Mountain is presenting Cocktails at the View sponsored by First Bank. At this event, you can enjoy the sun setting over Huntsville all while sipping a cocktail!

Other family-friendly activities include hiking opportunities! There are Burritt Nature Trails and also Land Trust of North Alabama Trails on Monte Sano Mountain. Each trail varies in difficulty and length to provide opportunities for all hiking levels. Monte Sano also has its very own State Park! This park is complete with hiking and biking trails, campsites, cabins, and even a playground for the kids or kids at heart!

If you’re not a hiking enthusiast but still want to enjoy the mountain breeze, visit The Little Green Store and Gallery! The store showcases regional and local jewelry, glass, pottery, and art. It’s a must if you’re interested in shopping locally!

IMG_8683.JPG

Cool Treats

Any hot and humid summer day can be cooled off with a tasty summer treat! Piper and Leaf in Constitution Hall Park offers iced teas of all flavors, and as a true Southerner, there’s nothing that beats an iced tea on a hot summer day! There are also creamier options, such as grabbing some ice cream from the Cozy Cow by Big Spring Park, gelato from Sam and Gregs on the Southside Square, or a milkshake from Cookie Dough Magic on Holmes. If you’re looking for a cool treat with adult options, check out Suzy’s Pops at Lowe Mill, Greene Street Market, or our Food Truck and Trailer Rallies! Their pops feature fresh produce from local farmers, and some of their pops are made with adult beverages.

Whatever way you decide to cool off, we hope you will check out these fun options Downtown Huntsville has to offer!

In Honor of Juneteenth: Q&A with a few of our African American Owned Businesses Downtown

by: Sydney Kate Watson, DHI Communications Intern

Do you shop vintage at the Goody Vault? Enjoy the cheesy goodness of Mac and Snacks? Have you redefined your look with a lash appointment at Lash Belle? All of these awesome Downtown experiences are brought to you by African American business owners! Since today is Juneteenth, we wanted to highlight the wonderful African American-owned businesses in our Downtown Core. If you are unfamiliar with Juneteenth, it is the annual celebration of emancipation in the United States. June 19 was chosen because, on this day in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the Civil War was over and slaves were now free. In honor of the date and Granger’s announcement, the day became Juneteenth, and the holiday is also known as African American Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. If you’re looking to shop at and support African American owned businesses in the Downtown Core for the Juneteenth Holiday, here are some you should check out: Black Pine Boutique & Style Clinic, Dapper Dude, Dionicios Closet, Goody Vault, Huntsville Gear, Lash Belle, Paper Dollz Traveling Boutique, Laquience Boutique, Ron Pollard Photo, Scenethat Tours, and Trifecta Graphics and Personalization. Also, since yesterday was our Food Truck Rally, we want to give a shout-out to our delicious African American owned Food Trucks, Trailers, and tents: Betty Jo’s, Delicious, Forever Grateful, LLC, Happi Pappi Beignets, Mac & Snacks, O Taste & See BBQ LLC, and Regale Cupcakes

This past week we spoke with a few local African American small business owners: Ericka Edwards - Lash Belle, Lorna Roberts - Blackpine Boutique & Style Clinic, Bryan Cole and Shayquawn Austin - Huntsville Gear, and Emanuel Edwards - Goody Vault. By asking different questions, we discovered who these business owners are and the uniqueness their stores bring to Huntsville’s collection of diverse small businesses.

First, start your staycation Friday afternoon by checking into a hotel. Of course, if you live close, you could simply stay at home, but staying in a Downtown hotel gives your staycation all the vibes of a real vacation. The AC Hotel by Marriott has pristine locations around the world, such as Tokyo, Japan, Madrid, Spain, and even Huntsville, Alabama. Chef Lee Gregory from their second-floor restaurant, BarVista, has been recognized by Esquire Magazine, GQ Magazine, and Southern Living. Friday’s dinner could very well be at BarVista, or you could stop for drinks and enjoy their fantastic view before you hit the town. Another hotel option is the Downtown Embassy Suites by Hilton Huntsville Hotel and Spa, which is literally connected to the Von Braun Center. So, if you’re attending one of the great events at one of Alabama’s premier convention and entertainment center complexes, the Embassy Suites and the VBC are a perfect connection! Also, there will be a brand new hotel, 106 Jefferson Huntsville Curio Collection by Hilton, opening this summer on July 28!

On Fridays, there is live music on the patio, giving you the perfect opportunity to see Big Spring Park or stop by the Huntsville Museum of Art before dinner. MELT is another great dining option and offers a variety of unique food options that you can’t find anywhere else. Combine that with their on-the-street seating options during weekends, making for an overall distinctive experience!

Of course, every vacation needs a shopping spree! Firstly, the Huntsville/Madison County Convention and Visitors Bureau is not just for visitors! They offer Huntsville gear, and you can even grab your Lucky Duck Scavenger Hunt clue card to explore the Rocket City in an entirely different way by finding the 14 hidden ducks. If you find all of them, there is a special prize! Also, every Saturday from May through October, Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment host their Outdoor Market from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and showcase vendors from across the area. After all that shoppin’ you must be close to droppin’, but don’t fret, it’s time for dinner! Make tonight superb at Church Street Wine Shoppe; they offer a wide variety of wines that pair nicely with their tapas or charcuterie boards. Other options for dinner that also offer splendid meals in fun environments are Cotton Row, Sea Salt, and Domaine South. That’s why the Rocket City Rover is the perfect option to experience three different brunch establishments, all while enjoying the outdoors of the city. The entire trail takes about two hours, so if you’re up for it, do it! If not, only stop by a few! One other exciting experience is Scenethat Tours; this is a fantastic way to learn about off-the-beaten-path places Downtown, and there is even an option to build your own tour! For this Downtown adventure, we recommend booking an appointment prior to your vacation.

Q&A with 13 of our Women-Owned Businesses in Downtown Huntsville

by: Alyssa Lee, DHI Communications Coordinator

Do you enjoy grabbing coffee at Honest Coffee Roasters? Shopping the latest trends at Elitaire or Roosevelt & Co.? Have you grabbed a bite to eat from Big Oh’s recently? Well, you can thank the women business owners of Downtown Huntsville for all of that! Downtown Huntsville has an outstanding amount of women-owned businesses just within the Downtown Core alone, and without these strong women in our community, some of your favorite businesses would not be here today.

Recently, Mayor Tommy Battle declared March 30th women-owned business day in Huntsville and we want to celebrate these women not only today but every day. Learn more about some of these great ladies of Downtown Huntsville below.

IMG_4129.jpg

Megan Powe- May Mays

Why did you decide to open your business? Downtown Huntsville was ready to go to the next level and there were no children’s stores. I wanted May May’s to not just be a place to shop but also a place to commune and a fun destination for children.

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman? I honestly haven’t had any struggles due to being a woman. Huntsville has been extremely supportive and encouraging even in the face of a pandemic.

What do you like the most about having your business in Downtown Huntsville? I love getting to meet everyone walking around town and also the support and love of all of the downtown business owners too! It’s a strong community.

What is your advice to young women in 2021? Follow your dreams and dream big! Always encourage each other!

Ericka Edwards- Lash Belle

Why did you decide to open your business? I opened Lash Belle to play an intricate role in making women feel beautiful and confident in themselves.

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman? One thing I constantly struggle with, is how difficult it is to be a mom and entrepreneur. You want to be there for every moment of your child’s life but you also want to give your business every ounce of your energy to feel fulfilled. It’s a constant struggle with work/life balance.

What do you like the most about having your business in Downtown Huntsville? I love being centrally located and the safety of being in a prime location.

What is your advice to young women in 2021? My advice to young women in 2021 is to be bold.

Rossina Boyer- Matices de Colores Arts

Why did you decide to open your business? While raising my 1 year old and staying at home, I started to feel eager to create new art. I started this adventure with the possibility of being a business and I was happy to quickly notice that this was my passion. I love being able to create and to bring happiness to people’s home.

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman? I started this dream a little before Quarantine, so it was difficult to promote my art pieces. Having a toddler and staying at home gave me only few hours a day to work. I had to be very organized with my time to be productive, but I made it work!

What do you like the most about having your business in Downtown Huntsville? I live Downtown and I love to be able to walk to my studio and work. Being part of Clinton Row shops has given me the opportunity to be part of events such as Sidewalk Sales and the Art Walk which has helped tremendously to my business.

What is your advice to young women in 2021? Embrace yourself, give yourself a chance and follow your dreams! Don’t wait any longer, 2021 is the year to flourish and let the world know the hidden talent inside of you!

Christy Graves- Honest Coffee Roasters

Why did you decide to open your business? I love the personal interactions you are able to have in a small business, and I wanted to be able to offer a place for people in the community to come together.

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman? When my daughters were younger, balancing the constant attention running a business demands and time with my family always had to be my focus or the most important things in my life would not have gotten the “me” they deserve.

What do you like the most about having your business in Downtown Huntsville? Definitely the vibe and atmosphere. Downtown Huntsville is exploding with energy and watching other businesses open and be successful is very exciting.

What is your advice to young women in 2021? I would encourage young women to have confidence in themselves, to go after their dreams, have a mentor they trust, and conduct themselves in business with a straightforward and honest approach. Owning my business continues to be rewarding and fulfilling in my life, and I would encourage any young lady with an entrepreneurial spirit, to go for it!

Christy.png
APanz - Angela Panzica.jpg.png

Angela Panzica- Stella’s Elixir Lounge

Why did you decide to open your business? In a city known for its science and engineering, I wanted to be a part of a growing food and art culture in Huntsville. I felt I could elevate the entertainment and nightlife while providing a little different atmosphere in Huntsville. Stella's should be a place where everyone feels welcome - posh but not pretentious!

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman? Stella's was built from my imagination, but my partner was instrumental in helping my business plan grow legs. As we met with key players who would implement my vision, my male partner and I wanted to be sure the message was clear who was the decision-maker. It seemed innate for people in initial meetings to address him or shake his hand first, but he was aware of these challenges and deferred to me to lead. As we continued, people started recognizing me as the person in charge and stopped looking to him. Even though Huntsville is relatively progressive, there are some antiquated mindsets that can present a challenge, but I'm learning how to navigate them effectively.

What do you like the most about having your business in Downtown Huntsville? I love being part of a culture that is on the verge of its Renaissance. I feel Stella's Elixir Lounge is giving people a "bigger city" feel even though it is a small, local, woman-owned business. Downtown Huntsville is an extremely welcoming and supportive community.

What is your advice to young women in 2021? Don't be afraid to bend the cultural norms. I have had so many people try to pressure me into something they wanted me to do even if it was against my best judgment. I have been told, "they won't like you if you do it that way." These are really baseless comments and hold no bearing on why you should not instill change. Stay strong to your authentic self. Other successful people will take notice and lift you up!

Meggan Crunkleton- Roosevelt & Co.

Why did you decide to open your business? Quite simply, we saw a need in our community for a men's specialty store. So many men were having to drive out of town in search of unique quality clothing. We also wanted to help spur the growth of retail in downtown Huntsville. Back in 2016 when we opened, there was not much retail to speak of, but we felt strongly about being apart of revitalization efforts to change that.

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman? As a female in a male dominated industry, it can be challenging at times. I think at first a lot of our vendors didn't really take me seriously as a female opening a men's specialty store, but now almost five years later, I think our track record speaks for itself. Sometimes it just takes time to prove yourself!

What do you like the most about having your business in Downtown Huntsville? Downtown has so much energy right now. We love all our neighbors and feel there truly is a sense of community.

What is your advice to young women in 2021? Be true to yourself. Know that you can do anything you set your mind to, and if things aren't easy along the way, that's okay. Just don't let the challenges get in your way.

IMG-1038 - Frida Morel.JPG

Frida Morel- Silhouette

Why did you decide to open your business? I wanted the freedom of being in control of my own life and hopefully be an influence to other women thinking of making that same leap. I needed to do something that makes me happy and owning my own business does just that.

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman? Luckily part of being my own boss, I haven't had to deal with too many obstacles. Instead I hope to use my position to empower other woman and give voice to female owned companies and brands.

Jeannie Gibson- Creative State

Why did you decide to open your business? My business partner and I had been selling at local art shows and wanted to have a storefront as an additional revenue stream, especially during the show off-season. We saw a need for locally handcrafted items from area artists and began adding their items to our shop. We now represent over a dozen different artists and makers from north Alabama.

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman? To be honest, we haven’t experienced anything that was linked to being women. I do woodworking, and have occasionally been asked “who makes these for you?” I use it as an opportunity to let them know how many women have taken up power tools and know how to use them!

What do you like the most about having your business in Downtown Huntsville? We love the “vibe” of downtown Huntsville and how they’ve planned, and are developing the area. When we first contemplated opening a shop, we attended a public redevelopment meeting and came away super-excited about the potential to tap into local and out-of-town shoppers that would be attracted to downtown as a destination to eat, play, and shop.

What is your advice to young women in 2021? If you’re starting a business, be prepared for it to take two years minimum to get established and profitable. If you’re already in business, make perseverance your mantra. Try new ways to do things, and don’t be shy to ask for help from your fellow downtown merchants.

Why did you decide to open your business? We grew up together but drifted apart over the years. When life brought us back together, we realized we had very similar interests, had both just quit careers, and were looking for something new.

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman? I feel like as women we are sometimes not taken seriously, especially as small business owners of a very small retail store. Our industry is sometimes viewed as frivolous and unimportant - more of a hobby than a career or an essential part of the local economy and culture.

What do you like the most about having your business in Downtown Huntsville? We love the people! Downtown is growing and home to a diverse crowd from all walks of life and we get to meet new people every day.

What is your advice to young women in 2021? Just do it! It sounds corny, but if you have a dream then go for it. A few years ago we would have never imagined we would own our own shop, but we took a leap of faith and it was worth every challenge that has come our way. Life is too short to be stuck doing something you don't love to do every day.

Kayla Adams- Elitaire Boutique

Why did you decide to open your business? Opening Elitaire has been a lifelong dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I think I’ve had the name since I was 18! Elitaire is French for “Elite” and all the clothing and shoe brands carried in our store can’t be found anywhere else in Huntsville. When we saw Downtown Huntsville being revitalized in 2016, we knew this would be the perfect spot for us!

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman? While there are many, being taken seriously has been the biggest struggle. Now it doesn’t happen quite as much, but the first few years were so hard!

What do you like the most about having your business in Downtown Huntsville? The community! Every business downtown is so supportive of one another and we really cheer on each other. There are also so many other women-owned business owners downtown and that’s so exciting to me. It truly is such an amazing community to be apart of!

What is your advice to young women in 2021? Coco Chanel said it best “If you want to be original, be ready to be copied.” Stay true to who you are and that will always shine through in the end!

Yeon Arnold- Big Oh’s

Why did you decide to open your business? Our family was always big on food and especially my dad. He loved to cook for people and that is his way to show affection and care for loved ones. While growing up and watching him, I wanted to open a restaurant that shared my family’s recipes with my own twist on Korean fusion. And we have been here over 5 years now! It makes me happy to see people who love our food and became regulars!

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman? It is hard to believe but just simply being a woman, I found that there are still many people who don’t take me serious because I am a woman business owner. I feel like I have to work harder to prove to them I am capable of doing the same things as a man or better.

Nancy Micaela Guerrero Finnegan- Nancy Finnegan MUA

Why did you decide to open your business? I was newly divorced and needed to have a flexible job because a few of my kids have a rare life threatening disease. They needed medical attention at random times, plus to be more available for all 3. I had been working as a makeup artist at the mall, the hours were horrible and demanding . I didn't want to be a sales makeup artist and be pushed to sell items more than my craft.

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman? My career has not caused any issues as a woman. I'm fortune that it's very woman friendly.

Suzanne Ramsden- Maverick Training Center

Why did you decide to open your business?
I wanted to share the Martial Arts that I was learning in a different way.

What struggles have you had to overcome running a business as a woman?
I'm in a completely male industry. I'm in the Combat Athletics or fight industry. Most women do not teach men Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and/or Muay Thai. People used to come watch me to see if I knew what I was doing. At tournaments, when my students won, the opponent's coach wouldn't shake my hand or come to the podium because they were embarrassed to lose to a female coach. Some guys would ask where's the man? haha. I drove 7 hours per day, 2 days per week for my Jiu-JItsu training from one of the first Jiu-Jitsu World Champions. It took a long time to be taken seriously, but now I have the respect.

What do you like the most about having your business in Downtown Huntsville?
I think being in Downtown Huntsville we are in the center of everything! The energy and visibility is amazing!

What is your advice to young women in 2021?
Do your thing, take chances. There are no rules. Change is good.
